Deanna wrote this song for her little son, Eric, who was in the habit of leaving his shoes on the stairway before going to bed. Ordinary things become extraordinary when they are put into musical form. This son has helped countless parents to look at their children through new eyes of awareness, and keep them in awe of the daily miracles around them.
Two Little Shoes They are all scuffed and worn Fom adventures that only a child understands. The laces, once broken, are mended. Tied in knots by a boy's tiny hands. When his two chubby arms come around me In a hug I can never refuse I think all the wonders of heaven Are tucked in those two little shoes. And each night I kneel. My heart sings a prayer. Thanks, dear God, for one little boy And two little shoes on the stair. I think of the harsh words I've spoken When those shoes scattered mud on the floor, But I know that my heart would be broken If someday they weren't there any more. I see them at night where you left them On your way to a dream coming true. My heart fills with love overflowing When I look at those two little shoes. And each night I kneel. My heart sings a prayer. Thanks, dear God, for one little boy And two little shoes on the stair. Thanks, dear God, for one little boy And two little shoes on the stair.

Grief |
All too often, people who are grieving are isolated from family, friends, and acquaintances who are afraid the pain may "rub off" on them, or who feel inadequate with what to say or do. What grieving people most need is a loving presence nearby. Physical presence can be more important than any words we speak.
Someone Who'll Stay The pain is all around me - it cuts me like a knife But I am a survivor and I'm fighting for my life. I can read the fear within you - I see it in your eyes. Your afraid that if you come to close My touch will turn to ice. Don't run away - stay by my side. Reach out your hand for the treasure inside. It's okay to hurt - you're not in my way. All that I need - all I need is someone who'll stay. I can't make any promises or give much in return But if you'll share the seasons of my heart There's so much you can learn. You will watch the spring unfolding After freezing winter snows. And you'll understand the reason Every thorn has it's own rose. Don't run away - stay by my side. Reach out your hand for the treasure inside. It's okay to hurt - you're not in my way. All that I need - all I need is someone who'll stay. All that I need - all I need - is someone who'll stay.
Deanna wrote this song to sing at the funeral of her father-in-law. It expresses a debt of gratitude for gifts given and lessons taught about living life fully in this moment. It speaks of release from physical pain and of the light to come. This experience taught Deanna that personal involvement in the grief process is the key to healing.
You're Going Home Oh, Dad, you gave us so much We can be thankful for. By your faith you've shown us all That love is an open door. You lit so many candles That we all could feel the glow And now it's hard, so very hard, to let you go. Going home, going home, to the arms of love. You've seen His face, you have a place Now you're with God above. And with all His warmth around you You will never be alone. The pain is gone, and life goes on, You're going home.
This song reminds us of the vital importance of intimacy, which can keep us close even when miles seperate us. Knowing that someone is always there for us helps us to know that we are never truly alone. We can be held closely in the human heart.
Keep Me Next To You I don't share myself with others, I've been so long on my own. I've spent so much time pretending That I never feel alone. Many feelings go unspoken. Finding words is hard to do. But you're the love I always needed So keep me next to you. Next to you is where I long to be In your heart, on your mind. If you hold me in your memory I won't be hard to find. When I know that someone cares Enough to keep me company. I'll stay close to you And keep you next to me. Be my starlight in the evening. Be my sunlight in the day. Be the fire's dancing embers Just don't be far away. Passing strangers there are many; Faithful friends are very few. I need a love I can depend on So keep me next to you. Next to you is where I long to be In your heart, on your mind. If you hold me in your memory I won't be hard to find. When I know that someone cares Enough to keep me company. I'll stay close to you And keep you next to me!

Divorce | Seperation |
Many people who go through the pain of divorce or separation begin to realize how easy it is to repair "things" - but hearts and dreams do not mend so easily. This song speaks of the need for protection and sensitivity so necessary in the process of keeping love alive.
The Hearts You Break You can take the love you offered me. You can turn it into memories. You can hide the feelings in your soul. But you can't take the hearts you break and make them whole. You can mend the toy that needs repair. You can change a tire anywhere. You can build a shelter from the cold. But you can't take the hearts you break and make them whole. You were so good at putting things together Everytime some little thing went wrong. But you could'nt make our love last forever. Broken dreams. Broken hearts. Broken homes. You can take the love you offered me. You can turn it into memories. You can hide the feelings in your soul. But you can't take the hearts you break and make them whole. No - you can't take the hearts you break and make them whole.

Happiness |
This song was written in a small village of Northern Germany for a family whose teen-age daughter had been killed in an auto accident. They said that her name was rarely mentioned, and that they had a need to remember Astrid in their thoughts and conversations. All of us have a need to be remembered. It is a comfort to know that even when death seperates us, we can continue to communicate and live through the power of love.
Remember Me Remember me Whenever you see a sunrise. Remember me Whenever you see a star. Remember me Whenever you see a rainbow, Or woods in autumn colors from afar. Remember me Whenever you see the roses, or seagulls sailing high in a sky of blue. Remember me Whenever you see waves shining in the sun, And remember, I'll be rememb'ring you. Remember me Whenever you see a teardrop, Or meadows still wet with the morning dew. Remember me Whenever you feel love growing in your heart, And remember I'll be rememb'ring you. Remember me Whenever you feel love growing in your heart, And remember I'll be rememb'ring you.

Before we can give ourselves away in service to others we must first value ourselves and the gifts we have to give. We must have the confidence to know that our acts of love can make a great difference in our own little corner of the world, and that what we give will come back to us in a thousand unexpected ways. True joy can only be found in service to others.
Give Yourself Away The gift of you is priceless - I'm glad to be your friend No one like you has ever been or will ever be again. The love you give so gladly is in my heart to stay. You're heaven made - don't be afraid to give yourself away. Each moment is a color - the brush is in your hand. A canvas of a lifetime is there at your command. Your hope can paint the rainbows for dreams that go astray. You're heaven made - don't be afraid to give yourself away. Tomorrow lives within you glowing like a flame. The hope of generations is written in your name. The light that shines within you will turn the night to day. You're heaven made - don't be afraid to give yourself away. You're heaven made - don't be afraid - to give yourself away.

Children | Loneliness |
Volunteerism |
This wonderful song tells the story of an elderly man in Tracy, Minnesota, who defeated loneliness by placing a want-ad in the Tracy Headlight Herald which read, "Wanted: one family to eat Christmas dinner with. I will furnish the turkey," Deanna was singing in a little country church when Pastor Homer Dobson showed her the ad. It touched her heart and she wrote a song for Joe Smarzik. Joe soon became a symbol for people everywhere who feel the same loneliness. The story took on a life of its own and made national headlines, attracting the attention of then President Ronald Reagan, who sent Joe an autographed photo. Hundreds of cards and letters continue to brighten his life.
Wanted: One Family On a cold and frosty morning I picked up the local paper And read the ads to pass the time away. The radio was playing my favorite Christmas music, Preparing for a special holiday. The snow was falling quietly And a distant bell was calling me. Through bitter cold such warmth was coming through, And then, so unexpectedly, these words were looking back at me, And I felt as if my heart would break in two. "Wanted ... one family to share my Christmas day. Wanted ... one friend to take the loneliness away. I'm not asking much of you. I'll only stay an hour or two. I'll even bring the turkey if you call. It's been a long and lonely day Since I have watched a child at play. And children are the greatest gifts of all" The Christmas story filled my mind And the night when Joseph couldn't find One room for little Jesus to be born. So in a manger filled with hay The King of Kings was gently laid, And angels sang for joy that Christmas morn. My own Dad died in early spring, And I couldn't help remembering How much my children missed their Grandpa's love. With trembling hands I took the phone, Called the local nursing home And found the dear old man who wote these words: "Wanted: one family to share my Christmas Day. Wanted: one friend to take the loneliness away. I'm not asking much of you. I'll only stay an hour or two. I'll even bring the turkey if you call. It's been a long and lonely day Since I have watched a child at play. And children are the greatest gifts of all" Yes children are the greatest gifts of all.
A letter which had been discarded by a child was picked up from a sidewalk and brought to Deanna's attention. It Read, "To Mom and Dad. I love you. I do love you. I hope you love me. Do you love me? Yes No ." Children have a difficult time discerning the difference between rejection and discipline. This song was written to help make parents more aware of a child's need for sensitivity and unconditional love.
Yes___ or No___? I didn't smile when I saw you come into the room I was rushed and my work wouldn't wait. I demanded the reasons why you were so slow. Hurry up eat your breakfast it's late. I didn't hug you this morning when you left for school. I complained that your work was un-done. But when I walked in your bedroom to pick up your clothes I found this letter from my little one. To Mom & Dad, I love you - I really do And I hope you love me. Your love, I know, will help me to grow And become all I know I can be. But sometimes I'm afraid that I'm just in your way. And it feels like you want me to go. So if you don't mind - please write on this line Do you love me? Yes____ or No ____. Through my tears I remembered the harsh words I said And the times I failed to be kind. I'd forgotten to ask how your days were at school And I'd scolded you so many times. So I wrote on your note in a bold shade of red. Do I love you? Oh, yes dear I do. And if you'll only forgive - for as long as I live I'll remember this letter from you.

Love |
In a musical self-description, Deanna wrote this song to encourage people to examine and express the positive and loving qualities they find in themselves. It expresses how our love can survive all the vicissitudes of life and reach out to others to brighten their lives.
I Am Love When the night is falling softly on your shoulders And the darkness flows as far as you can see. When you're praying for the courage to be bolder Turn around and take another look at me. I am song - I am rain - I am laughter - I am pain. I'm all the things you dream of. I'm a woman and a child - a flower growing wild But most of all - I am love. I have confidence to give you when you're frightened. And the warmth to feel your heart when you're alone. All you never knew before - I could never give you more Than the gift of all my love to call your own. I am song - I am rain - I am laughter - I am pain. I'm all the things you dream of. I'm a woman and a child a flower growing wild But most of all I am love. I'm a woman and a child - a flower growing wild But most of all - I am love.

So often when we see pain and difficulty befall another we want to step in and make it better. We feel impotent in the face of tragedy. This song reminds us that it is not within our power to make the world safe or take away the shadow of death. Free-lance writer Sam Keene writes, "The best we can do is to hold each other in this luminous darkness, and if through our struggles we finally come to be close to each other, that is enough."
That's Enough I can't remove your loneliness Or heal your broken heart. Can't take away the shadows That make your nights so dark, But I can stay beside you When life is getting tough. If we come close together, That's enough. I don't have all the answers And I don't know what to say. I can't make living safer Or take the rain away, But I can always hold you When the storm is getting rough. If we come close together, That's enough. I had to learn so many things And fail so many times Before the day I fin'ly realized. If we could take the sorrow From ev'ry loss that comes along We'd have to take the loving out of life! I can't remove the dangers From a world so full of fears. I can't make living safer Or take away your tears. But I can always love you With a love that you can trust. If we come close together, That's enougn. And if we come close together, that's enough!

This song addresses breaking down the walls of fear that keep us from telling someone else who we really are. Author John Powell said, "I'm afraid to tell you who I really am because you may not like who I am and I'm all I have." When we find the courage to come forward and share our feelings, love blossoms and people's lives can be forever changed.
Since You Came Into My Life Like a ship on stormy waters I was drifting with the tide. Searching for a missing homeland with a longing deep inside. A door was locked within my soul and I could never find the key. But all the pieces seemed to fall in place When I saw your face - I saw a part of me. Now I will never be alone - the sun will never leave the sky. Love will never be the same again Since you came into my life. Your laughter sparkles in my memory. Where you touched me I have grown. No matter where our paths will lead us. In your heart I'm coming home. The door was locked within my soul and I could never find the key. But all the pieces seemed to fall in place When I saw your face - I saw a part of me. Now I will never be alone - the sun will never leave the sky. Love will never be the same again Since you came into my life.
When Deanna's little friend, Doug Turno, died from a malignant brain tumor, Deanna wrote this song for him. It is a reminder to parents everywhere that heaven is a place where little children can feel at home, and perhaps find heavenly playgrounds not unlike those they enjoyed on earth.
The Littlest Angel The littlest angel in heaven Loves kittens and cowboys and fun. Heaven will never be just as it was Now that his life there's begun. He'll turn fluffy clouds into snowmen And swing on the stars up above. He'll turn golden streets into playgrounds And fill up God's home with his love. He'll make dandelions out of sunbeams And find grassy meadows for playing. His laughter will ring where the great choirs sing, But he'll hear me whenever I'm praying. The littlest angel in heaven Is one I am longing to see, For the child that belongs now with Jesus Is the child that belonged once to me. Yes, the child that belongs now with Jesus Is the child that belonged once to me.

While wandering through a field of wild sunflowers in Kansas, Deanna wrote this song to remind people that every day is a birthday, a day to begin again with new hopes and new dreams, in spite of past trials they have had to endure.
Today Is The First Day Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You can't live on memories of painful goodbyes. This day is your birthday and love is the prize. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Yesterday brought more heartaches and moments of pain And somehow your losses were more than your gains. More failures than triumphs were hiding the sun But you have to remember that your life's just begun. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You can't live on memories of painful goodbyes. This day is your birthday and love is the prize. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. There's still sunshine and blue skies and daydreams to dream. There are sunflowers still blooming and fields by a stream. And someone still needs all the love you can give. There is hope in your future and a reason to live. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You can't live on memories of painful goodbyes. This day is your birthday and love is the prize. Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
